Gallium Nitride in Power Electronics Converters. Motor drive, DC-DC, and Lidar

Marco Palma (Efficient Power Conversion, IT) 

Marco Palma joined EPC in 2019, where he is Director of motor drives systems and applications. He has over 20 years of experience in motor control power electronics ranging from switches to gate drivers, controllers, and algorithms. For International Rectifier, Marco worked on the smallest 13 kW fully integrated and programmable motor drive power module in 2002, the first industrial sensor-less FOC controller IC in 2004, and the smallest 100 W, fully integrated fan drive module in 2009. For Infineon technologies, he worked on the smallest programmable 100 W fully integrated motor control power module in 2018. He is the author of several articles and patents in the field of motor control. Marco earned his Master of Science degree from Politecnico di Torino and his Master of Business Administration from Bocconi Management School, Milano. 

Overview

GaN devices, such as discrete GaNFETs and integrated circuits entirely made of GaN technology, are widely being adopted across different applications and are becoming well recognized in the power electronics industry. In the workshop, the basics of the GaN technology will be presented, to share basic knowledge and to depict the main difference vs. MOSFET technology. During the talks in the workshop, the GaN approach and its related advantages will be presented for dc-dc converters, motors, and Lidars.

GaN Technology Basics and Application to Motor Drives

An introduction to the GaN technology and its main features. EPC approach with Chip Scale Package and QFN package will be presented. Then the advantage of increasing PWM frequency and reducing dead time in motor drive will be shown with experimental results.

Dead time Reverse Conduction optimization in GaN-Based Inverter for Motor Drives Applications

In this talk you will learn how the inverter parasitic parameters, the interwinding capacitance in the motor, and the load currents are shaping the switching events in a GaN inverter for motor applications. You will also learn how to optimize and the difference vs. MOS based inverters.

Salvatore Musumeci (Politecnico di Torino, IT)

Salvatore Musumeci received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, in 1991 and 1995, respectively. From 1996 to 2001, he was with the R&D Department, STMicroelectronics, Catania, Italy, as an Application Engineer on power devices applications. From 2001 to 2017, he has been involved in several research collaborations with the Department of Electrical Electronic and Systems Engineering, University of Catania, Catania, Italy. Since 2018, he has been an Assistant Professor of Power Electronics, Electrical Machines, and Drives with the Energy Department of Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy. He is involved in the Power Electronics Innovation Center (PEIC), a new competence center of the Politecnico di Torino (PoliTO) focused on power electronics. He has authored more than 100 papers in scientific journals and international conferences on the topics related to the fields of interest described. His research interests include advanced power devices, switching power converter applications, high-efficiency industrial motors, magnetic materials and their applications, battery management systems, and automotive power electronic applications.

Paralleling GaNFET devices for inverter applications

In motor drive applications, in topologies where low voltage GaNFET devices are used, it is often required to increase the amount of current. This is reflected in the number of devices that need to be put in parallel per switch. In this talk you will learn the most important parameters that affect the parallel, the switching frequency and the temperature.

Vincenzo Barba (Politecnico di Torino, IT)

Vincenzo Barba Ph.D. candidate at Politecnico di Torino PEIC. Master degree in Electrical Engineering in 2021. Vincenzo's Ph.D. research is about the analysis and development of converter topologies using Gallium nitride (GaN) devices, with the main focus on motion control. He works in the Power Electronics Innovation Center laboratory at the Politecnico di Torino.

Using SPICE model of GaN to design power converters

In this talk Timothé Delaforge will show how to use the SPICE models of the GaNFETs as important pieces of an automatic system that help designers in finding the optimum topology and the optimum configuration, given the converter requirements and the optimization criteria.

Timothé Delaforge (Bern University of Applied Sciences, CH)

Timothé Delaforge received the Ing. Degree in power electronics from Univ. Grenoble Alpes in 2012 and the Ph.D degree in 2015. 
He achieved his PhD in collaboration with Schneider Electric ITB. He developed an electronic automated design tool for Schneider Electric. 
He is currently senior researcher at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. He oversees power converter hardware design, modeling, and innovation for industrial partners such as Bombardier Transportation, Eaton, or Volvo. He is involved in research on optimization methods; high efficiency high power density power converters; new magnetics; GaN and SiC based multi-level converter with focus on parasitic cancellation and extremely efficient cooling; gate drivers for medium voltage 15kV application and next generation electrical based communication.

In this talk you will see the benefits of GaN integrated circuits in dc dc applications. This part is presented by an industry expert and details of the GaN integrated circuit approach are given.

Michael de Rooij (Efficient Power Conversion, US)

Michael de Rooij is VP of Applications Engineering at Efficient Power Conversion Corporation (EPC) headquartered in El Segundo, CA. Dr. de Rooij has authored and co-authored over 50 papers at various conferences and journals and has been granted 30 US and International patents and 26 US and International pending patent applications. He is the author and co-author of 6 books. His experience covers wireless power, high-density DC to DC converters, GaN IC development, solid-state high-frequency power converters and devices, utility applications of power electronics, uninterruptible power supplies, integration of power electronic converters, power electronic packaging, induction heating, photovoltaic converters, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Systems and gate drivers with protection features. Dr. de Rooij is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Fundamentals of Driving Pulsed Lasers for Time of Flight Measurement systems

in this talk you will see the benefits of GaN integrated circuits in Lidar and time of flight applications.  The speed and peak current capabilities of GaN has opened the possibility of distance measurement using the time of flight of light as a gauge.  The discussion will break down the mechanics of pulsed laser drivers, and present how to obtain the speed and power needed to be delivered to laser for efficient, high-resolution imaging. This part is presented by an industry expert and details of the GaN integrated circuit approach are given.

Steve Colino (Efficient Power Conversion, US)

Steve Colino is VP of Strategic Technical Sales at EPC.  He has analog and power experience for 37 years at EPC, Texas Instruments, Ciclon Semiconductor, Vishay-Siliconix, International Rectifier, and ILC Data Device. He received his BE in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and his MBA from Adelphi University.
